The Fairfield Art Association’s 3rd annual downtown summer art installation is now up for everyone to enjoy. This year’s exhibit “CHAIRS – a front row seat!” features 20 original creations by area artists which are placed on poles in the garden nodes around the Fairfield square. The outdoor exhibit will remain on display through the September Art Walk, when each chair will be silent auctioned and proceeds going to FAA projects. The bidding this year will take place on our soon to be launched web site: www.fairfieldartassociation.com and at the FAA Gallery at the Fairfield Arts & Convention Center.
Participating artists were encouraged to think of uncommon chairs, or even just a chair “in spirit”, therefore the representation of entries is very varied. Several chairs are meticulously hand painted, others are fancifully decorated, some are minimally adorned and others lavished with elements, there are those that are sculptural, and those that remain traditional in style – but all very different. Most remain useable as seats -although some go beyond normal “sitting” capabilities. Materials used by the artists include branches, photographs, candy wrappers, corks, bottle caps, trowels, gloves, acrylic, polyethylene, spoons, shoes, cream separator, mosaic, tulle, wood pallets, barbed wire, chimes, and metals. A variety of unusual recycled chairs being transformed include a cedar wood lawn chair, a dining room chair, metal fan back lawn chair, several oak chairs, parts of assorted chairs, woven wicker chair, 50s era chair, and miniature chairs.
The artists participating and titles of their works are: Fairfield Area Community Theatre “Best Seat in the House, Fairfield Beautification Commission “Gardener’s Companions”, Holly Manon Moore “Imaginary Landscapes”, Laurel Lee Osborne “The Greening of Fairfield”, Olaya Veras “Party on the Flower”, Manuel Coradin “Ambiguous Movements”, Sandi Wilson “Treasurers Lurk”, Jill Dahlstrom & Cris Soth “Yummy’s Gourmet Cakes”, Kathy Tollenaere “Sister Chairs…” and “…But Not Quite Twins”, Laura Cohen & Erin Smith “Mon ‘chair’ ie”, Kem Bappe & Mt.
